Community Fridge Project

The Story

The story of the Lincoln Heights fridge, and its challenges and successes, is a long but interesting one. Click HERE if you’d like to read the full story. Here is the summary….

At the start of the calamity that changed the world, something wonderful dropped into my life - a community fridge. After agreeing to host the fridge in front of my home, I began the most gratifying period of my life. Like most people at that time, I had time on my hands, and before I knew it, I was devoting every minute of that time to this fridge and the community of Lincoln Heights.

My entire skill set, from graphic design, to promotion, to problem solving, and more, all came into play, in the creation of something truly magical. My days were spent promoting the fridge, soliciting and accepting donations, cleaning, putting everything on shelves, interacting with community members and recruiting and coordinating volunteers.

At its height, the Lincoln Heights Community Fridge was putting 500 pounds of free food per day into the hands of housed and unhoused residents of Lincoln Heights. I think it’s safe to say it was the busiest (and cleanest) community fridge in all of LA. Despite that it had me working around the clock seven days a week, I can honestly say, this fridge project was the most joyous experience of my life. I witnessed more generosity and gratitude in those 6 months than most will see in a lifetime. Sadly, the fridge was shut down due to circumstances beyond my control but the community fought to keep the pantry which still stands today. I will never forget this amazing experience. ❤️
